Heritage

Every building tells its very own story, and history buffs will revel in the rich heritage of Picton for its historically significant buildings and distinctive characteristics.

Whatever you do, don't forget to look up as you travel down Picton's Main Street to spy some of the unique architectural features including those of the Picton Branch of The Prince Edward County Public Library.

The library was built in 1906 through a charitable donation provided to the Town through the Carnegie Foundation (established with funding from the Carnegie family fortunes.) Likewise, the Case Block, circa 1862, located at 187 Main Street, is another fine example of Picton's commitment to protecting its heritage.

The County has taken great strides to protect Picton's historically significant buildings through its Heritage Program and as you walk the streets, you're sure to see some of the beautiful plaques in celebration of Picton's history.

Design guidelines are also in place to encourage best practices in design and visual consistency in Picton's historical core.

As the Picton BIA continues its downtown revitalization efforts, take note of the heritage benches and street signs, bike (hitching) posts, street lights and signs, all of which continue to celebrate Picton's unique charm.

Of course, no description of Picton is complete without mention of the historic Crystal Palace, located at the Picton Fair Grounds (375 Main Street), which holds a storied past of its own. Modeled on Britain's original Crystal Palace, Picton's Palace, built in 1890, is one of the last of its kind in North America.
